Stop the execution of Ali Mohammed al-Nimr

MEPs have passed a resolution with an overwhelming majority urging Saudi King Salman to offer clemency to Ali Mohammed al-Nimr, who was sentenced to death in August for protesting against the government. He was 17 at the time. Under the terms of the sentence he will be beheaded then crucified. The case is the latest in a string of human rights controversies involving Saudi Arabia and follows their appointment to a key panel on the United Nation's Human Rights Council.

Refugee crisis: EU has turned back on its values

EU must tackle refugee crisis at its root and review all development policies within third countries

Refugee crisis: EU has turned back on its values

We currently stand before a page of European history characterised by the unacceptable violation of the most basic human rights. We are confronted by images that portray human beings - children, women, men, families - fleeing, in search of a better future. For years, this continuous massacre has been carrying on day after day. We cannot remain indifferent to the tragedy that is unfolding on our doorstep. The crimes we now witness daily are an offence to all of humanity. Europe, tainted by currents of xenophobia and racism, has turned its back on its own values; to disregard the suffering of another human being is an act of violence.

Gaza: "Bombing, destruction, civilian deaths, madness, war; an endless war"

Ignazio Corrao is a co-author of the EU response to Gaza conflict resolution

 Gaza:

The conflict between Israel and Palestine is probably emblematic of the stupidity, senselessness and smallness of the human being, as well as the impotence of the institutions and international organisations of any nature and origin. Ever since I was a child, since I can remember, the message that came constantly from that part of the world for me was one-way: bombing, destruction, civilian deaths, madness, war; an endless war, a war which, like every damn war, knows no winners or losers, but exclusively victims and losers.

Ebola is not only a medical emergency and case for humanitarian assistance, it is also a social and political problem

Ignazio Corrao is a co-author of parliament's resolution on the EU response to the Ebola outbreak

Ebola is not only a medical emergency and case for humanitarian assistance, it is also a social and political problem

Ebola has been declared a public health emergency of international concern. Yet we are in the eighth month of the outbreak and the situation keeps worsening. It is high time to for this humanitarian and security crisis to be solved and EU should play a leading role in the process. The EU response should be three-fold. First of all, it should include coordination with all international partners and particularly the US in the fight against this epidemic. The UN is the most appropriate forum to deal with this crisis and the European commission should speed up its coordination efforts for a joint response.
